At the crossroad of european cultures
Luxembourg’s location at the crossroads of Latin and Germanic culture, the adoption of French and German as the country’s official languages since the Middle Ages, the country’s past under the rule of the Burgundy region of the Netherlands, the Spanish, Austrians and the French and the presence of a Prussian garrison in the 19th century have all helped to forge a spirit of openness in Luxembourg. The fortress of Luxembourg, which has been awarded UNESCO world heritage status, was constructed by the great powers of ancient Europe. This international military architecture became home to the humanitarian exhibition ‘The Family of Man’ by Edward Steichen in 1966 which has also achieved UNESCO world heritage status and which presents a portrait of humanity where all races and cultures are equally valid, based on 503 photos by photographers from 69 different countries
